g before g, k, c, x is nasal, e.g.:
s is written
within a word for sigma, j at
the end, e.g. sta&sij : stasis. |
z, c, and y are double consonants with j :
q, f, and x
were aspirated consonants, i.e.:
followed in each case by an h
sound;
later, and in modern Greek, the pronunciations are:
a,i, and u can be short or long, e.g.:
su& - su (cf. French tu), mu~qoj - (moothos).
h - as in the French è, or, approximately, 'ey' as in English grey.
u - transliterated is usually y, e.g. yuxh& psyche.
iota subscript:
i, after a~, h, w is written under the vowel and is mute, e.g.:
but, in 'Upper Case':
| o@ mikro&n and w} me/ga ('little o' and 'big o') are later names for the letters, |
| as is the case with e2 yilo&n and u@ yilo&n ('e plain' and 'u plain'), |
| so called to distinguish them from similar sounding diphthongs. |
Vowels combine in the following diphthongs:
| ai | ei | oi | ui | au | eu | hu | ou |
| pai=j | ei0j | oi]noj | ui9o&j | au)to&j | eu9ri/skw | hu{ron | ou)dei/j |
*some give the distinction between ei and h as that between French é and è. |
ai

oi
transliterates as
| An initial vowel, r
(rho) or diphthong always has a breathing mark written above it:
| The breathing is written to the left of a Capital, and above the second vowel of a diphthong. A vowel with a 'rough breathing' is aspirated and pronounced accordingly (h...), with a 'smooth breathing' it remains unaspirated. Initial u (upsilon) or r (rho) always has a 'rough breathing'. Breathings, like iota subscripts, are part of the spelling of a word, and must always be inserted, even if accents are omitted. | |
| Capital letters are used for Proper Names,
to start a new paragraph, and to indicate the beginning of a quotation in
direct speech. Breathings and accents are written to the left of Capitals,
but above the second vowel of an initial diphthong, e.g.
In Greek:
| ti/ e0stin; | e0sti r(o&don: | r(o&don e0sti/ moi. |
| What is it? | It is a rose; | the rose is mine / to me. |
| There are three accents:
| Accents were not introduced until the second century B.C., and then as a guide to pronunciation. |
| Beginners may ignore them, |
| except for noting the few occasions where the accent is a guide to the meaning, e.g.: |
